The 10 Best Air Compressors for Spray Painting (Latest Review)

By Sara William

Best Air Compressors, Best Air Compressors for Spray Painting

Are you looking for the best air compressors for spray painting? If you’re looking for an easy way to expand your spray painting projects, consider investing in a temporary paint spraying system.

This will not only give you more time and space freedom but also make it easier than ever to tackle any project that comes along!

The list of the top 10 best air compressors is listed here, with a more in-depth look into each one. The first compressor on our list for this post from Campbell Hausfeld has an oil-lubricated pump and cast iron cylinder that will provide you long-lasting use without any maintenance needed to be done aside from just checking occasionally.

It can work up to 90 PSI at 40 SCFM which makes it easy enough for smaller projects like spray painting furniture or even working on small vehicles such as cars and motorcycles.

However, if your project requires larger areas of coverage then keep reading below where I’ll discuss some other options!

My Top Picks: 10 Best Air Compressors for Spray Painting

Industrial Air IL1682066.MN Portable Air Compressor – Best Air Compressors for Spray Painting

The Industrial Air IL1682066Mn is a bit more expensive than the others. Although you can find 20-gallon compressors for a much lower price than the IL1680266 Mn, I prefer to think of it as flying first class rather than sitting on a couch in a commercial aircraft.

It is equipped with a single-stage cast iron V-twin-cylinder single-stage pump. Because the compressed air is compressed in two cylinders simultaneously, more air can be produced and directed into each cylinder.

It is ASME-rated and can hold 20 gallons of pressure. This will allow it to handle the high pressure required to power your air tools.

It can hold a maximum pressure of 135 PSI, so it will be able to run high-demand tools.

The compressor will also keep up with that. It will shut off automatically when the tank is full. If it runs low, it will start over again.

It is quiet, and I can’t forget to mention it.

Pros

  • It includes free oil
  • It is easy to maneuver
  • Two-year warranty
  • Lasting

Cons

The wheels should be topped up with air

Dewalt DWFP55126 Air Compressor

There are many 6-gallon air compressors available. The Dewalt DWFP55126 6 Gallon Air Compressor is one of the best. At 90 PSI, it can produce 2.6 SCFM.

It can produce air at higher pressures if you require it to.

The 6-gallon compressors that you will find are oil-less have one thing in common: they make a lot of noise.

It is quieter than many of the others you will come across. You can still have a conversation even with the noise on at 70 decibels.

The compressor, as mentioned, is oil-less, or oil-free. This means that there is no need to add oil while using it. It also means that less maintenance is required.

It is recommended that you drain any remaining air from the compressor after it has been used.

Dewalt provided a ball drain verve for the bottom of the compressor, not the middle. It weighs in at 30 lbs, which I find quite light. It’s portable and easy to use at home.

Although it is more expensive than other 6-gallon compressors, it will be well worth it.

Pros

  • It comes with a large tank that can hold up to 6 gallons
  • It is very light and portable.
  • Very quiet so no noise pollution
  • It can be done quickly at external locations and in the coldest temperatures.

Cons

  • The compressor does not have wheels so it must always be lifted.
  • Some DIYers and users may find the electric cord distracting.

Makita MAC700 Gallon Air Compressor

The Makita MAC700 compressor is small in size but it has plenty of pecks.

Makita promises a quiet, single-cylinder compressor that fills up quickly when you purchase the MAC700. After testing the compressor, you will find that it fills up in under 2 minutes.

Because of its pump, the Makita MAC700 can fill up quickly. The pump cylinder is larger than other pumps in its class, with a larger bore and piston. It also has a longer stroke length.

The MAC700 is very quiet because it has an oiled compressor. The oil sight glass allows you to see the level of oil in the compressor.

You can either top it off or drain the bad oil out using the oil drain valve. Fresh compressor oil is often supplied with the unit. It is quiet and quick to recover once it has started cycling.

The compressor tank drops below the pressure required for operation. Either the pump starts cycling or it kicks on by itself.

In less than two minutes, the 2.6-gallon tank will be filled again. It can produce approximately 3.3 CFM at 90 PSI.

Pros

  • The horsepower is double that of comparable air compressors on the market.
  • With safety and health in mind
  • Easy to maintain and durable

Cons

  • It doesn’t have wheels, so it must be lifted.
  • Some users find the tank’s 2.6-gallon capacity to be too restrictive, but this is subjective.

Bostitch BTFP02012 Air Compressor

Although the Bostitch BTFP02012 compressors and Dewalt DWFP55126 compressors are nearly identical, the main difference is that they are made by different companies: Dewalt and Bostitch. Both are oilless compressors. So, require less maintenance.

The 6-gallon compressor can produce a maximum pressure of 150 PSI. This is slightly less than the Dewalt counterpart, but it won’t make much difference in use. It can produce an SCFM of 2.6 at a pressure of 90 PSI.

It’s an oilless compressor as mentioned above. This means that it can cause damage to your ears. Therefore, you should consider wearing ear protection whenever you use this compressor. The compressor is equipped with a high-efficiency motor that will keep it running in cold climates. You can use the compressor with a friend by using two couplers.

The compressor is a 6-gallon compressor so it will eat your air quickly if you use some air-demanding tools.

However, if the motor is kept running, the compressor will recover very quickly so you can keep working at a steady speed.

Pros

  • Separate reading gauges
  • Performance at a lower price
  • It holds 6 gallons.
  • Pump that is oil-free

Cons

  • Warranty valid for one year
  • The length of the power cord is 5 feet. An extension will be needed to extend the reach of the power cord across the job site.

Industrial Air ILA4546065 Air Compressor

The Industrial Air ILA4546065, which is identical to the Powermate Vx PLA4708065 air compressor, is a single-staged 3 piston air compressor. It’s a 60-gallon compressor.

The compressor is a high-pressure 3 piston compressor. It can keep up with high CFM air tools, and it can recover quickly if pressure drops. The compressor can produce 14 CFM at 90 PSI and can store air up until a pressure of 150 PSI. This compressor is oil-lubricated and has an oil sight glass to help you keep the oil level in control.

Cast iron crankcase and aluminium cylinder heads make up the 4.7 HP pump. This allows for proper heat dissipation and cooling.

Powermate Vx PLA4708065 Air Compressor

The Powermate Vx PLA4708065 is one of my favorite compressors. The compressor is an 80-gallon single-stage air compressor with a 3 piston pump and a 4.7 HP motor. It operates at 3450 RPM.

It can store up to 155 PSI air and produces 14 CFM at 90 PSI air pressure.

To prevent the thing from moving around or falling on the ground during operation, it must be secured to the ground in your shop. You will need something similar to a shop crane for setting it up as it is heavy at 350+ lbs.

The 3 piston pump is able to distribute the work of compressing air across 3 cylinders, and thus reduces the pump’s workload.

Because it compresses air faster than a compressor using only one cylinder, the pump produces more air at once.

This compressor is oil-based, so make sure there is oil in the crankcase. The oil sight glass allows you to easily monitor the oil level. This beast requires a 240 volts power supply to run.

Pros

  • Motor with a powerful motor
  • It gives you a nice, even finish
  • Long-lasting
  • Running with no sound

Cons

  • Transporting from one place to the next can be challenging.
Powermate Vx PLA4708065 80-Gallon Electric Air Compressor

Guide to Buying an Air compressor for spray painting

These small tips will help you choose the best compressor for you if you’re in a market searching for one.

There are many air compressors on the market. Your selection will depend on whether you’re looking at a large-scale professional project or just a small DIY job. It is important to have a systematic and rational approach to the purchase and pre-purchase of an air compressor for spray painting.

You can use different air compressors for different equipment and devices. Make sure you choose the right one for your paint sprayer.

Here are some key factors that can help you choose the right air compressor for you.

1) CMF Rating

CMF stands to measure cubic feet per minute. CFM is the unit that rates the volume of air provided by the compressor. CFM refers to the amount of pressure that this compressor can exert on your sprayer.

Although it won’t give you an indication of the compressor’s run time, it can tell you how much volume the compressor can handle.

2) Weight

Another important aspect to consider before you make a decision. The product’s portability will be determined by its weight. You want an air compressor that is easy to move when painting large objects. Even though you might need something larger for a longer time, lighter objects are still easy to move and use.

3) Horsepower (HP).

This is a crucial specification that must be considered. A motor of 1 to 2 horsepower is ideal for DIY and other non-industrial uses. Paint sprayers that are rated at 6 CPM and 30-40 PSI are also recommended.

Today, 2 HP compressors are available in mainstream retail stores. However, you will need a compressor with at least 8 CFM at 40% PSI.

4) Oil in the compressor

Oil compressors can be large, heavy and expensive but they are durable. Oil-less compressors, on the other hand, are much lighter and more maintenance-free than oil-based compressors.

Although oil-based compressors were quieter in the past, technological advances have made it possible to eliminate noise differences between similar models.

5) Noise and noise reduction

Noise from a compressor can be a problem. It is even more so if the area is closed. Even if the compressor has the lowest decibel rating (dB), ensure that accessories are available for purchase and installation.

It would be a good idea to have expansion chambers mufflers or regular automobile mufflers that can block low frequency.

The noise from compressor inlet holes can be reduced by using intake silencer filters.

You can also purchase soundless compressors. However, they are expensive even for small businesses. You can also add sound dampers to your workplace like fibreglass insulation. These can prevent the sound from spreading outside.

6) The price

Portable air compressors that are pancake-shaped may be the best choice for DIYers who are price-conscious. These compressors are smaller and lighter than most and can be chained so you don’t have to use a 220v outlet.

7) Operating Considerations

Motor-driven air compressors dissipate heat, friction and are motor-driven. This holds true for oil-less compressors, which are becoming increasingly popular among DIYers and anyone who enjoys this hobby.

You don’t need to adjust the quality of your paintings. Make sure you work in well-ventilated areas.

8) Style

You may need to think about styling in this age where everything is all about the latest trends. Look at the various styles, such as hot dogs, pancakes, and pontoon compressors. They will all affect the compressor’s performance and could impact your final decision.

Pontoon compressors have the strongest power ratings and will last longer. They are strong but can be difficult to transport. You need to think about what you really need before you make a decision.

9) Roll Cage

Roll cages can protect critical components of an air compressor. A quality roll cage can protect the critical components of your air compressor and make it unlikely that it will be crushed or smashed. This is a must if you don’t want to have to purchase again or suffer a terrible experience.

10) Tank Size

It is important to consider the size of your air compressor. A small compressor won’t be able to handle the job. To make it more efficient and easier to use, choose an air compressor with 50 gallons or more.
